A carotid doppler is an ultrasound imaging technique used to detect possible blockages in the carotid arteries, which are located on either side of the neck and supply blood to the brain. This test helps visualise the carotid arteries and assess the blood flow through them.
A carotid doppler may be recommended if you have any of the following conditions, which can increase your risk of a stroke:
The procedure may also be indicated to determine whether previous surgery to treat a blockage of the carotid artery was successful.
Preparation for a carotid doppler is minimal:
Here’s what to expect during the procedure:
1. Preparation: You will lie on a table, usually on your back. A clear gel will be applied to your skin over each carotid artery to help transmit the ultrasound waves.
2. Transducer Use: A device called a transducer, which emits sound waves, will be gently pressed against the sides of your neck. The echoes of the waves bouncing off the tissues and blood cells are recorded.
3. Imaging: The information is relayed to a computer, producing live images on a monitor, and the rate of blood flow is represented by a graph.
4. Comfort: You should not feel any discomfort during the procedure.
5. Duration: The test usually takes about 30 minutes to complete.
A carotid doppler is not associated with any side effects and does not require any post- procedural care. You can resume your normal activities immediately. The results are often available right away. If a blockage is discovered, your doctor will recommend the appropriate
treatment.
By understanding the carotid doppler process, you can better prepare for the procedure and know what to expect, ensuring a smoother experience and clearer results.
