At Vascular Clinic, angiography is carried out by our consultant vascular surgeon, Mr. Maziar Mireskandari, using the latest techniques for safe, accurate assessment of blood vessels. This procedure is a gold standard for visualising arteries and veins in detail, helping to diagnose and guide treatment for a range of vascular conditions.
An angiogram may be recommended for diagnosing several conditions, including:
An angiogram can also be used to dissolve a clot found during the test. For cases involving narrowed arteries due to plaque build-up (such as in PAD and atherosclerosis), an angiogram is often combined with angioplasty. This procedure involves inserting a catheter with a balloon into the artery, which is then inflated to open the blockage and improve blood flow. Additionally, an angiogram can assist surgeons in planning procedures for severe and complex blood vessel disorders.

Medical History: Inform us of any allergies, especially to contrast dye, iodine, or medicines. Also, let us know if you have any kidney problems, bleeding disorders, or if you are pregnant.
Medications: You may be asked to temporarily stop blood-thinning medication before the procedure. Bring a list of your current medicines to your appointment.

Clothing: You may need to change into a hospital gown for the procedure.
You will be made comfortable on an X-ray table and a small intravenous line will be placed in your arm.
The skin where the catheter is inserted (usually the groin or arm) will be cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic.
A thin catheter is gently guided into the blood vessel, and contrast dye is injected to make your blood vessels visible on X-ray.
You may feel a warm sensation as the dye is given.
The team will take a series of detailed X-ray images to assess your blood vessels.
If needed, certain treatments such as angioplasty can be performed during the same procedure.
Most angiograms take between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the complexity.
You will be monitored in our recovery area for a few hours.
You may need to rest and avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day.
Our team will give you advice on caring for the catheter site and when to resume normal activities.
Drink plenty of fluids to help clear the contrast dye from your system.
Your consultant will review your results with you and arrange any follow-up care needed.
Angiography is generally safe when performed by experienced specialists. Risks include minor bleeding or bruising at the insertion site, rare risk of infection, and very occasionally, an allergic reaction to the contrast dye. Kidney function can be affected in rare cases, particularly in those with pre-existing kidney problems. Our team will carefully assess your health before the test and answer any questions you may have.
