MRI angiography

Expert MRI Angiography

MRI angiography at Vascular Clinic is carried out under the direction of consultant vascular surgeon Mr. Maziar Mireskandari. Using advanced magnetic resonance imaging technology, this test provides detailed pictures of your blood vessels, allowing for precise diagnosis without exposure to X-rays.

What is MRI Angiography?

MRI angiography, often called MRA, uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create high-resolution images of arteries and veins in the body. It is particularly useful for detecting narrowing, blockages, aneurysms, and abnormal blood vessel formations. MRA is a non-invasive test that does not involve radiation.

We offer MRI angiography for all major vascular regions, tailored to your needs:

Head and Neck
Assesses the arteries and veins supplying the brain, including the carotid and vertebral arteries. This test helps identify narrowing, blockages, or aneurysms that can affect blood flow to the brain.

Lower Limbs (Arterial and Venous)
Evaluates both arteries and veins in the legs. This scan can detect arterial narrowing (peripheral arterial disease), venous blockages, or abnormal veins contributing to swelling, pain, or leg ulcers.

Abdomen and Pelvis
Focuses on the major blood vessels in the abdomen and pelvis, such as the aorta, renal arteries, and pelvic arteries and veins. Useful for detecting aneurysms, blockages, or vascular malformations in these areas.

  • Consultant Expertise: All scans are performed with consultant supervision, ensuring expert oversight and precise reporting.

  • Advanced MRI Technology: We use the latest MRI scanners for clear, reliable imaging.

  • Patient Comfort: Our private clinic is designed for your comfort and privacy, with flexible appointments and supportive care.

  • Quick Results: Reports are reviewed and explained directly by Mr. Maziar Mireskandari, so you have clarity and reassurance without delay.

  • Personalised Follow-up: If further investigation or treatment is needed, your consultant will guide you through the next steps.

  • Clothing and Jewellery: Wear comfortable clothing with no metal fastenings. Remove all jewellery, watches, and metal objects before the scan.

  • Medical Devices: Inform us if you have any implants, pacemakers, metal clips, or previous surgeries. Not all devices are compatible with MRI scanning.

  • Medications: Continue taking your usual medicines unless told otherwise.

  • Diet: You can usually eat and drink normally unless advised differently before your appointment.

  • Claustrophobia or Anxiety: Let us know if you feel anxious in enclosed spaces. We can provide support and make you as comfortable as possible.

  • You will lie on the MRI table and be moved into the scanner. Cushions and headphones may be provided for comfort.

  • A contrast dye may be injected through a vein in your arm to improve the images.

  • The scan is painless, but you will need to remain still. You may hear loud tapping or buzzing noises, which are normal for MRI.

  • Most scans take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the areas being assessed.

  • You can communicate with our staff at all times.

  • There is no recovery time needed for most people. You can return to your normal activities straight away.

  • If you received a contrast dye, drink plenty of water afterwards.

  • Your consultant will review and explain your results promptly, discussing any findings and recommendations.

MRI angiography is very safe and does not use radiation. Rarely, some patients may experience mild allergic reactions to the contrast dye. If you have implants or metal devices, we will carefully check your suitability for MRI before the scan. If you have any concerns, our team is happy to advise and reassure you.
