Vascular Ultrasound

Expert Vascular Ultrasound

At Vascular Clinic, our vascular ultrasound service is led by consultant vascular surgeon Mr. Maziar Mireskandari, offering high-quality, consultant-directed vascular imaging for fast and accurate diagnosis. We use the latest ultrasound technology to assess blood flow in key arteries and veins throughout the body, ensuring each patient receives personalised and attentive care from start to finish.

What is Vascular Ultrasound?

Vascular ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of your blood vessels. This allows us to assess blood flow, detect blockages or narrowing, identify clots, and diagnose a range of circulatory conditions—all without exposure to radiation.

Our clinic provides expert assessment of the following vascular areas:

Carotid Ultrasound
Examines the carotid arteries in the neck, which supply blood to the brain. This scan is essential for detecting narrowing (stenosis), plaque build-up, or blockages that can increase stroke risk.

Aortic Ultrasound
Focuses on the abdominal aorta, the main artery in your abdomen. This test is most often used to screen for or monitor abdominal aortic aneurysms (a swelling or bulge in the artery wall).

Lower Limb Arterial Ultrasound
Evaluates the arteries in the legs for narrowing or blockages, often caused by peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Symptoms such as leg pain when walking (claudication) may prompt this investigation.

Lower Limb Venous Ultrasound
Assesses the veins in the legs to detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT), venous insufficiency, or varicose veins. It helps guide treatment for swelling, pain, or leg ulcers.

Ankle-Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI)
This simple, non-invasive test measures blood pressure at your ankles and arms to help diagnose and monitor peripheral arterial disease. It is often performed alongside lower limb vascular ultrasound.

  • Consultant-Led Care: All scans are performed or supervised by Mr. Maziar Mireskandari, ensuring the highest clinical standards.

  • State-of-the-Art Imaging: We use the latest ultrasound technology for precise, reliable results.

  • Personal Service: We offer flexible appointments, private facilities, and a discreet, comfortable experience.

  • Rapid Results: Most reports are available within 24 hours, with results personally reviewed and explained by your consultant.

  • Comprehensive Support: Should further investigations or treatment be required, a clear plan is discussed with you immediately.

  • General Preparation: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown for the procedure.

  • Aortic Ultrasound: You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for several hours before the test to improve scan accuracy.

  • Medication: Continue your usual medications unless advised otherwise.

  • Questions or Concerns: Our team will contact you ahead of your appointment to explain the process and answer any questions you may have.

  • You will be made comfortable in a private room and positioned depending on the area being scanned.

  • Gel is applied to the skin, and a small probe (transducer) is moved over the target area. The test is entirely painless.

  • The ultrasound captures real-time images of your blood vessels and blood flow.

  • Most scans take between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the area(s) assessed.

  • There is no recovery time needed, you can return to normal activities immediately.

  • If ABPI is performed, you may feel slight pressure from the blood pressure cuffs, but this passes quickly.

  • Your consultant will review the results and discuss them with you, providing a clear explanation and next steps if any abnormality is found.

  • You will receive a copy of your report and any recommendations for further care or follow-up.

  • Vascular ultrasound is extremely safe, with no known risks or side effects. It does not involve radiation and does not require injections or contrast dye. If you have any specific concerns or medical conditions, please discuss these with our team ahead of your appointment so we can ensure your comfort and safety.
